Quantum Dice has responded to the five quantum industry strategy missions published by the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology that build on the UK’s National Quantum Strategy:
Quantum Dice welcomes the government’s announcement of five “moonshot missions” building on the £2.5bn national quantum strategy launched in March. This announcement is a sure step towards ensuring that the UK remains at the forefront of the global quantum ecosystem.
These missions include the development of UK-based quantum computers capable of performing 1 trillion error-free operations. While this commitment to quantum computing development is both admirable and ambitious, we must consider in conjunction with it, the threat posed by quantum computers to RSA encryption that we rely on to secure our data today. Long-term digital security achieved through updating quantum hardware is paramount and should be addressed now, not only in the future.
We are pleased to see the government’s pledge to deploy the world’s most advanced quantum network at scale, pioneering the future quantum internet, by 2035. It is encouraging to see the government make an official commitment to taking a leadership role in the development of global quantum networking standards. Robust and clear regulations are central to ensuring that the industry maintains momentum and innovation in the pursuit of a globally connected quantum internet.
We believe that the UK government’s pledge to achieving ambitious objectives in such a variety of quantum technologies affirms and validates our commitment to developing hardware that secures our increasingly connected world.
We look forward to continuing our work on contributing to the development of standards, integrating our technology with quantum key distribution and post-quantum cryptography, developing QRNGs to enable secure quantum communication, and playing a key role in the commercialisation of quantum technologies.
